Text over Calls: Why we need to make real connections

Text over Calls: Why we need to make real connections

By Asma’u

Let’s be honest, we all prefer texts over calls. Like you can literally call me, I’d see the call but wouldn’t pick up but will send you a message immediately after. I know we all face or faced the same problem at some point. But why though? And is it a bad thing?

Why we prefer texts over real interactions

It’s lowkey & less pressure; typing is so easy and quick and you don’t stress yourself thinking about what to say or do.

 You’re in Control

Send a voice note, or a snap or a TikTok. Or just leave them on read. You choose the pace, and you can respond at any given time.

It feels safer

Online, you can be more you. You can talk about deep stuff without feeling exposed. You can develop an alter ego totally different from the real you.

Reasons why real life interactions matter

– Job opportunities: You can’t DM your future boss and say “yoo, can I have this job?” You have to have a real life conversations to secure a job, for group projects and any business.

– Relationship goals: Whether it’s friendships or dating—real talk builds real connections.

– Mental health check: Sometimes, your friend says “I’m fine” over text. But you can see they’re not, IRL. That matters.

How to get over text syndrome

The following are how you can get over text syndrome :

– One FaceTime a week. Start with your bestie. Even 5 mins counts.

– Voice note > Text sometimes. It’s more personal, less awkward than calls.

– Practice real convos with safe people. Family, cousins, someone at school.

Tiny challenges this Week (Pick 1, We Dare You):

–  Send a voice note instead of a text.

– Start a convo IRL, even if it’s just “Hey, what’s up?”

– Look up while walking (phones down, heads up challenge!).

–  Compliment someone out loud—yes, with your voice.
