Schoolgirls in Abuja were urged on Wednesday to see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and innovators during an event celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS).

The event took place at Government Science & Technical College, Garki Area 3, and was sponsored by IHS Nigeria in partnership with the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (WTEC) and the Youth Initiative for Sustainable Human Development in Africa (YiSHDA).

During her speech, Asmau Smila, Associate Director of Sustainability at IHS Nigeria, reminded the girls that they belong in science and technology. “You belong in classrooms where big ideas are born, in labs where discoveries happen, and in conversations that shape the future,” she said.

She added that STEM isn’t just about numbers or formulas; it’s also about creativity and innovation. “Your dreams matter. Your voice matters. And you belong in science, technology, engineering, and maths,” Smila encouraged.

Mr Lesley Tarabina, Curriculum Developer at WTEC, said the programme is designed to give girls the skills and confidence to thrive in tech. Last year, it reached 300 girls in Lagos, Kano, and Enugu. “This year, we are covering Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt, aiming to inspire 600 girls and build the next generation of innovators,” he said.

YiSHDA’s Director of Programs, Mr Moses Agbara, also stressed the importance of closing gender gaps in STEM. “We want to inspire, empower, and connect young people to opportunities locally and globally,” he said.

The event included interactive sessions and mentorship opportunities, showing girls that they can explore, learn, and succeed in STEM. Organisers emphasised that every girl deserves the chance to dream big and shape the future.
