How to be a good student/learner

By Omowonuola K. Oluwatuyi

The process of acquiring education is known as learning. Although this may seem simple, it is, in fact, a complex process. Many experts have proposed different methods to help learners understand effectively, but not all methods apply to every student.

Learning is unique and varies from person to person. Some individuals grasp concepts quickly, while others take more time. Some students study for short periods and excel in exams, while others require longer hours.

Given these differences, how can one become a good student and achieve academic success? There are multiple strategies to accomplish this, but here are some essential and highly rewarding ones that can help students reach their academic peak.

Develop Strong Time Management Skills

One of the foundational traits of a successful student is the ability to manage time effectively. Good time management allows students to balance their academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and personal life. Prioritising tasks based on deadlines and importance, breaking down large projects into smaller, manageable steps, and avoiding unnecessary distractions can significantly improve productivity. If a student is overwhelmed by extracurricular activities, they should consider reducing their participation to maintain focus on academics.

Maintain Consistent Study Habits

A productive study environment is essential for effective learning. A quiet, clutter-free space with minimal distractions promotes concentration and retention. Additionally, setting realistic goals for each study session; such as mastering a specific concept or completing a certain number of practice problems can boost motivation and provide a sense of accomplishment. Engaging actively in class participation is crucial for academic success. Listening attentively during lectures helps students absorb new concepts and connects them with prior knowledge. Taking good notes is equally important, as they serve as valuable study materials. Reviewing notes regularly and revising the material enhances understanding and highlights areas that require further clarification.

Develop a Growth Mindset

Students with a growth mindset believe that intelligence and abilities can be developed through effort and persistence. They are more likely to seek help when needed, experiment with different learning strategies, and ultimately improve their skills. Additionally, they tend to be more resilient, overcoming obstacles with determination and perseverance.

Be organised and proactive as it is key to academic success.

Keeping study materials, notes, and assignments well-arranged ensures easy access when needed. Proactive students stay ahead of the curriculum by anticipating upcoming assignments and exams and preparing in advance. Seeking additional resources, such as online tutorials, supplementary readings, or peer study groups, can provide deeper insights into challenging topics.

A great student takes ownership of their learning and looks for ways to expand their knowledge beyond the classroom. In conclusion, being a good student is not solely about intelligence or talent; it is about developing strong habits, dedication, and a proactive mindset.

Effective time management, consistent study routines, active participation, a growth mindset, good health practices, and organisational skills all contribute to academic excellence. By cultivating these habits and focusing on personal growth, any student can improve their academic performance and develop a lifelong love for learning. Ultimately, a great student is not just one who excels academically but also strives for continuous self-improvement and contributes positively to their community. Being an outstanding student isn’t just about getting the highest grades; it’s about working hard, staying focused, and making the most of your learning. Anyone can become a great student by developing the right habits and mindset.
