Freshly baked chicken pie

If you love snacks that are warm, tasty, and full of flavor, then you’ll love chicken pie! It’s a soft, buttery pie filled with delicious chicken and vegetables. It’s perfect for picnics, lunch boxes, or as a fun treat after school. Let’s learn how to bake your own yummy chicken pie at home.

Ingredients

For the pie dough:

2 cups of flour

1 teaspoon of baking powder

A pinch of salt

1 cup of margarine or butter

1 egg (to brush the top)

4 tablespoons of cold water

For the filling:

1 cup of cooked and shredded chicken

1 small carrot (chopped into tiny cubes)

1 small potato (chopped into tiny cubes)

½ cup of green peas

1 small onion (chopped)

1 tablespoon of flour (to thicken the filling)

1 tablespoon of butter or oil

½ cup of milk or water

Salt and seasoning cubes (to taste)

Directions

Start by heating a spoon of butter or oil in a frying pan. Add the chopped onions and stir until they turn light brown and smell nice. Then add your shredded chicken, carrots, potatoes, and green peas. Stir them together for a few minutes.

Next, sprinkle a tablespoon of flour into the mix and stir well. This will make the filling thick and creamy. Add a little milk or water, some salt, and seasoning cubes for taste. Let it cook for about five minutes on low heat, then remove it from the stove and let it cool down.

In a big bowl, mix your flour, salt, and baking powder together. Add your margarine or butter and use your fingers to rub it into the flour until it looks like breadcrumbs. Pour in the cold water slowly and mix until you get a soft dough. Don’t make it too sticky or too hard. Wrap the dough in a clean nylon or cling film and keep it in the fridge for about 10 minutes.

Take the dough out of the fridge and cut it into small balls. Roll each ball flat using a rolling pin (or even a clean bottle). Use a round plate or cup to cut out a circle shape.

Spoon a small amount of the chicken filling into the center of the circle. Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Press the edges together with a fork to seal it so the filling doesn’t spill out.

Place your pies on a baking tray and brush the top with a beaten egg to make them shiny and golden when baked. Ask an adult to help you with this next part! Put the tray into a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) and bake for about 25–30 minutes until the pies are golden brown.

Once baked, take your yummy chicken pies out of the oven and let them cool a little before eating. The inside will be hot and delicious!

Your homemade chicken pies are ready! They’re crunchy on the outside, soft inside, and filled with creamy chicken goodness. You can enjoy them with juice or tea, share them with friends, or pack them for lunch. Cooking can be fun and tasty, especially when you make it yourself!
