Devastating challenges of bullying in schools

By Praise Okafor

Bullying is a form of aggressive behaviour involving intentional, repeated, and harmful actions by one person or group towards another.

It takes various forms, including verbal, physical, social, and cyber bullying. Verbal bullying involves name-calling, insults, and threats. Physical bullying includes hitting, pushing, or kicking. Social bullying involves exclusion and spreading rumours, while cyber bullying uses technology to harass or intimidate.

This widespread issue affects millions of students globally, causing lasting emotional, psychological, social, and physical harm. Studies show two in ten students experience bullying, especially in middle school, regardless of cultural background or socioeconomic status.

Bullying arises from personal, social, and cultural factors. Insecurity and low self-esteem drive bullies to exert power over others. A dysfunctional home environment, including exposure to aggression or emotional neglect, increases the likelihood of bullying behaviour. Peer pressure also plays a role, as individuals may unknowingly engage in bullying to fit in.

To prevent bullying, schools must foster a culture of empathy, respect, and inclusivity. Strategies include promoting a positive school environment, training teachers, monitoring student interactions, and encouraging a sense of belonging. Addressing bystander behaviour is also crucial, as witnesses can play a key role in stopping bullying.

Bullying is a serious issue, but by working together, we can create a safer, more supportive environment for all.
