Cyberbullying prevention and online safety for teens

By Zainab Adamu

Cyberbullying is a serious issue that affects many people, especially children and teenagers.

Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, intimidate, or bully someone.

Cyberbullying comes in different forms. It can be through text messages, where mean or threatening messages are sent through SMS or messaging apps. On social media, cyberbullying is by posting hurtful or embarrassing content about someone on social media platforms.

Cyberbullying also exists through the use of emails, online forums and while playing online games.

Cyberbullying can lead to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and depression. This explains why it should be prevented or avoided.

This can be achieved by telling teenagers not to accept any online activity meant to intimidate, threaten or harm them or anyone else.

Remind them that giving bullies attention is exactly what they want, so ignore them as much as possible. Tell them not to erase or delete messages from cyberbullies.

Encourage teenagers to talk to their parents and teachers if anyone says or does something online that makes them feel uncomfortable or threatened.

Teenagers should watch for the warning signs of being cyberbullied.

Teenagers should guard their contact information.
