Over 13,000 students participate in ASSEP quiz

Over 13,000 Senior Secondary School three students from four northeastern states participated in a quiz assessment under the Academic Science and STEM Education Program.

A statement by ASSEP said that the assessment, which began on Tuesday, November 19, ended on Thursday, November 21, 2024, and aims to improve STEM education and prepare students for national exams in Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe states.

ASSEP is a significant part of the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance educational outcomes in the North-East, specifically within Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Yobe states, and is aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

At the unveiling of ASSEP in Bauchi earlier this year, Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, urged state governors in the North-East to utilise the program to close educational gaps and elevate learning outcomes in the region.

This year’s quiz assessment covers seven critical subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science, and Further Mathematics.

“The aim is not only to assess knowledge but to promote academic excellence, mastery of STEM subjects, and foster healthy competition among students. The initiative also seeks to create a platform where students can demonstrate their skills in a supportive environment.

“A total of 13,295 students from one senatorial district in each of the participating states are involved in this phase of the program.

In Bauchi, 932 students are participating; in Borno, 4,020 students from 10 schools; in Gombe, 5,002 students from 17 schools; and in Yobe, 3,341 students from 8 schools.

“The ASSEP quiz assessment is part of a broader strategy by the Federal Government, through the North East Development Commission, to enhance the education system in the region, particularly in STEM-related fields. By engaging local communities, educators, and schools, the program aims to strengthen academic preparation and enhance exam readiness, specifically for national exams like WAEC, NECO, and JAMB,” it read.
