An 18-year-old boy, Aminu Abdulazeez, has been sentenced to three months of community service after admitting to stealing crates of Nutri Milk and Dudu soft drinks in Bazza, Michika Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
Aminu told authorities that he stole the drinks so he could celebrate his birthday with friends. He was later traced and arrested.
He was first taken to Area Court I in Bazza, where he was sentenced to three months in prison with an option of a ₦40,000 fine. After failing to pay the fine, he was sent to the Mubi Correctional Centre.
During a review of inmates by the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee, Aminu restated his involvement in the offence. The committee, led by the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, reviewed the case and approved a non-custodial sentence.
The court ruling was changed to community service. Under the new order, Aminu will spend three months cleaning public places, a health centre, or a police station in Bazza instead of staying in prison.
