A student of Kwara State University (KWASU), Teslimat Abiola Nurudeen, has achieved something truly remarkable—she has become the first undergraduate from the school to complete a solo flight.

Teslimat, who is in her final year studying Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering, flew an aircraft all by herself at the Ilorin International Airport on April 20, 2026. Her flight lasted 24 minutes, during which she successfully navigated around the airport without an instructor on board.

This achievement didn’t happen overnight. Teslimat went through months of intense training, including classroom lessons, flight simulator practice, and supervised flying sessions to prepare for the big moment.

As part of her journey, she also completed a six-month Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) at the International Aviation College in Ilorin, where she gained more hands-on experience in aviation.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, praised her achievement, describing it as outstanding. He said her success shows that students can balance their studies with demanding professional training.

He also noted that Teslimat’s accomplishment could encourage more young people, especially girls, to explore careers in engineering and aviation.

Other university officials, including the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Abdulraheem Toyin Abdulbaqi, and the Head of Department, Dr. Taofiq Omoniyi Amoloye, also congratulated her, calling her solo flight a major milestone for the school

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released more results for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), including those of candidates who wrote the exam on Monday, April 20.

JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, shared the update on Tuesday via his X (formerly Twitter) page, saying candidates can check their results using the usual method.

To check results, candidates are to send UTMERESULT to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number used during registration.

This latest release adds to earlier batches already made available by the board.

JAMB had earlier announced that 1,264,940 results for candidates who wrote the exam on Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April 18, had been released.

Before that, 632,752 results for candidates who sat the exam on Thursday, April 16, were also made available.

So far, a total of 1,897,692 results have been released from the first few days of the nationwide examination.

However, the process has not been entirely smooth.

Some candidates who wrote the exam on April 17 complained about difficulties checking their results, saying they tried several times without success.

The delay led to frustration, especially among those who stayed up late expecting their scores.

Reacting to this, Benjamin apologised to affected candidates for the delay in releasing the results.

“We sincerely apologise for the delay in releasing the results for Friday, April 17,” he said.

He explained that the delay was due to official engagements involving JAMB’s leadership but assured candidates that the results would be released as soon as possible.

He also thanked candidates for their patience and understanding.

The 2026 UTME, which started on April 16, is expected to end on April 23, with over two million candidates sitting the examination across computer-based test centres nationwide.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has explained why some candidates are seeing “No Result Yet” when they try to check their 2026 UTME scores.

In a statement on Tuesday, JAMB’s spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said the board has received many questions from worried parents and candidates about the message.

He clarified that the message is not due to a technical problem.

According to him, it mostly applies to underage candidates whose results have not been released.

“Results for underage candidates have not been released,” he said.

“When they try to check, the system will show ‘No Result Yet.’”

JAMB explained that, by its rules, only candidates who will be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2026, are allowed to register for and write the UTME.

However, there is a special exception for younger candidates who perform extremely well.

To qualify under this category, a candidate must score 320 and above in the UTME and also score at least 80 per cent in further screening stages.

Benjamin added that only candidates who meet these high requirements will be considered for admission under the “exceptional candidates” category.

For now, JAMB says results for underage candidates will remain unavailable until the next stage of the process.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the first batch of results for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The results, which were released on Friday night, are for candidates who wrote the exam on Thursday, April 16.
JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser, Dr Fabian Benjamin, shared the update on his X (formerly Twitter) page, saying that about 632,788 candidates can now check their results.

To check your result, simply send UTMERESULT as a text message to 55019 or 66019 using the same phone number you used during registration.

For now, candidates can only view their scores. Printing of results will be available later.

JAMB also warned candidates not to tamper with or edit the SMS results to make their scores look higher. According to the board, this is a serious offence.

The board revealed that two candidates and one parent have already been arrested for trying to manipulate UTME results using artificial intelligence and other electronic methods.

JAMB stressed that anyone caught doing this will face legal consequences.

The examination is still ongoing, and more results will be released in batches as they become available.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has said candidates who missed the 2026 UTME due to issues at their exam centres will get another chance to write it.

JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr Fabian Benjamin, gave this assurance on Friday in Abuja while officials monitored the ongoing exams.
According to the board, about 2.2 million candidates are expected to sit for this year’s UTME across 966 computer-based test (CBT) centres nationwide.

However, on the first day of the exam, some candidates complained about technical problems and delays at certain centres, which stopped them from writing their papers.

Reacting to this, Benjamin said such challenges can happen during a large exam like UTME but assured candidates that no one will be left out.

Every candidate who registered for this exam will have the chance to write it,” he said.

He explained that if a centre fails or a candidate misses their exam for any reason, JAMB will reschedule them for another date.
Even if a candidate misses the rescheduled exam, they will still be given another opportunity.

To make this possible, JAMB has planned a special “mop-up” exam for affected candidates after the main exam ends.

This mop-up exercise will ensure that anyone who couldn’t write their exam due to technical issues or other problems gets another chance.

Benjamin also said small disruptions are expected when conducting an exam across many centres, but the important thing is that solutions are already in place.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, Mohammed Dandutse, said steps will be taken to improve how CBT centres operate.

He added that it is unfair for candidates to travel long distances and still be unable to write their exams, promising that such situations will be addressed.

The 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), commenced nationwide yesterday, but was marred by a security incident in Benue State, where gunmen abducted 14 persons, some of whom are UTME candidates, on their way to examination centres.

The incident involved a Benue Links commercial bus traveling from Makurdi to Otukpo. According to witnesses, the attack occurred between 7 p.m.  and 8 p.m on Wednesday, with the bus carrying 16 passengers, largely youths, heading for the examination.

It was learned that only the driver and one other passenger escaped, while 14 passengers were abducted.

The Chairman of Otukpo Local Government Area, Maxwell Ogiri, confirmed the incident, stating that the victims were traveling to write the UTME when the attack occurred.

“The victims are young people coming to Otukpo to write JAMB. Security agents have been deployed and efforts are ongoing to rescue them,” he said.

Efforts to obtain a response from Benue Links, the state-owned transport company which owns the attacked bus, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as neither the spokesperson nor the General Manager responded to calls or messages.

However, the Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Enemari, confirmed the development, noting that he personally led security operations in the area.

“I’m in Otukpo now; all my team and DPOs are here in the bush, and I’m heading the operation.

“What happened was that one Benue Links bus carrying passengers coming to Otukpo was stopped and attacked by hoodlums, and 14 passengers were kidnapped, but one was able to escape.

“We know that Benue Links, as a policy, doesn’t usually drive at night. So, from what I got, they had already closed, but the driver, for reasons best known to him, which we are still trying to find out, picked passengers along the road, and when he came here, the story you have is what we are having.

“But we are investigating. We are on the ground to make sure that the victims are rescued. The victims comprised of passengers,” he said.

However, JAMB’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Fabian Benjamin, when contacted for comments, urged caution in interpreting the reports, describing them as unverified.

“You know Nigerians love this kind of story. I have made calls and no one has been able to give me anything to that effect. So, it is still speculative. But if and when I get more information, I will let you know,” he said.

Network glitches, hijab row mar conduct

Apart from the reported abduction, the exam started across states with familiar ambition but quickly descended into a mix of delay, controversies, and glitches that once again cast a shadow over one of Nigeria’s most critical academic exercises.

Scheduled to run through April 22, the examination is structured into four daily sessions beginning at 7:30 a.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m., a framework designed to manage the large volume of candidates and reduce congestion at Computer-Based Test (CBT) centres.

This year, nearly 2.2 million candidates are participating across 966 accredited centres, each expected to meet operational benchmarks such as functional computer systems, stable internet connectivity and electricity as well as adequately trained personnel.

Across multiple centres, candidates encountered disruptions. Reports of network glitches, malfunctioning systems, and administrative delays were widespread, leaving many candidates stranded for hours or unable to complete their examinations.

In several locations, sessions scheduled for early morning did not begin as scheduled, compressing the time available for candidates. Others experienced abrupt system shutdowns, forced logouts, or inconsistencies in time tracking, all of which directly affected their ability to perform under already high-pressure conditions.

One candidate recounted a particularly troubling experience that highlighted both delay and technical inconsistency.

“JAMBHQ, this is unacceptable. My exam was for 9:00 AM but started around 12:00–12:30 PM. During the exam, my screen showed 30 mins left, yet we were told only 6 mins remained, and I was logged out before finishing English,” @Ayoola2043576 said on X.

Such accounts were not isolated. Across states, candidates described scenarios where system timers appeared unreliable, often displaying remaining time before abruptly terminating sessions.

“Went for my JAMB exam today but couldn’t log in due to an error with my registration number (202660450790CB). I was denied the chance to write despite arriving prepared. @JAMBHQ, please urgently address this and reschedule for affected candidates,” @mogetech pleaded.

In Ogun State, the situation took a more fundamental turn. At a CBT centre in Ifo, both the first and second batches of candidates reportedly could not sit for their examinations due to the absence of a functional server and operational computers.

“Both the first and the second batch of students were not able to write their JAMB exams at this CBT Centre in Ifo, Ogun State, because there’s no server and no working computer. The officials present claim the fault is from JAMB itself,” @theonlybiola said on X.

Similar patterns emerged in Kwara and the Federal Capital Territory. At a centre in Thomas Adewumi University, Oko, repeated system shutdowns disrupted the 8:30 a.m. session, affecting multiple candidates.

“Unacceptable experience at the JAMB CBT centre in Thomas Adewumi University, Oko, today. System failures and frequent shutdowns ruined the 8:30 AM session for many candidates,” @AdekeyeDamilo14 said on X.

In Old Karu, Abuja, candidates faced repeated logouts due to network instability and were reportedly asked to leave without additional time to complete their examinations.

“At SkillPath Int’l Academy, Old Karu, all candidates were repeatedly logged out due to network failure and couldn’t complete their examination. They were still asked to leave despite time not being up. No extra time given. This is unacceptable. We demand a resit for all affected,” Mariam Ali (@mariamsmally) said.

In Lagos, candidates at a CBT centre in Ogba raised concerns about premature submission of their exams by the system, even when they still had time remaining.

“Dear JAMB, We, students, don’t make submissions, and we have an extra 15-20 minutes left. The system automatically submits itself. Here’s our CENTER: Topflight Engineering CBT (ctr 2), 8 Muyiwa Close, off Ajayi Road, Ogba, Lagos,” @ola_best_comedy said.

In Ibadan, it was hijab controversy

While technical hitches dominated reports from many centres, a controversy in Ibadan introduced a different dimension to the challenges of the opening day with one centred on rights, compliance, and institutional oversight.

At the Esther Oshikoya CBT Centre along Sango Eleyele Road, there were reports that female candidates wearing hijab were either denied entry or compelled to remove their head coverings before being allowed to sit for the examination.

The development sparked immediate outrage among parents and observers, who described the directive as a violation of the candidates’ constitutional right to freedom of religion. The incident stood in sharp contrast to JAMB’s clearly stated guidelines, which permit the use of hijab during examinations.

The board has consistently maintained that candidates are not required to remove religious coverings, except for minimal adjustments to ensure that both ears are visible during biometric verification. According to JAMB, this requirement aligns with global standards used in passport and visa identification processes. The Ibadan incident was later resolved following intervention by JAMB officials.

JAMB attributed the incident to an overzealous ad hoc staff member who failed to comply with the board’s established guidelines on candidates’ religious attire while emphasising that the action was neither perpetrated by the CBT centre nor sanctioned by the board.

“The Board respects the religious beliefs and customs of all Nigerians and has addressed the situation promptly and appropriately.

“We assure all candidates, regardless of faith, that their rights to religious expression including dressing remain a cornerstone of our policy,” the board’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Fabian Benjamin, said in a statement.

In a separate development, some candidates raised concerns about being assigned to CBT centres far from their homes, forcing them to undertake long trips.

Innocent Oche, a repeat candidate from Benue State, lamented what he called the logistical burden associated with such postings.

“This year, I registered early but was posted to Ugbokolo, at the Benue State Polytechnic, for my exam on Saturday. That is one of the challenges I observed. Some students, while returning from exams last year, had accidents too. It will be better for us to write the exams in the towns where we live,” he said.

Candidates report smooth processes in Abuja, Kano

Despite the widespread challenges, not all experiences were negative. In parts of Abuja and Kano, candidates reported relatively smooth and well-organised examination processes.

“We did our thumbprint successfully, and everything went smoothly. After that, we were called according to our numbers and seated properly.

“There were clear instructions before the examination started, which helped us understand how to save answers and end the test,” said Stephen Sonde at a CBT centre in Abuja.

“The exam was good, and everything worked very well,” Emmanuel Anyaoha added.

“This is not my first time writing the UTME. The centre is very nice, and everything worked perfectly. There was no challenge at all,” said Elijah Itua.

Heavy security deployments across states

Security arrangements across several states also reflected a high level of preparedness. In Osun, security agencies including the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and DSS were deployed across CBT centers, maintaining a visible presence and ensuring orderly conduct.

Similar measures were implemented in Taraba, Delta, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory, where police authorities conducted inspections, deployed personnel, and issued warnings against any attempt to disrupt the examination process.

“During the inspection, the Commissioner of Police evaluated security arrangements put in place to protect candidates, officials, and examination facilities.

“He also interacted with centre supervisors, assured them of adequate security presence throughout the examination period, and pledged the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order.

“The CP warned that any attempt to disrupt the process will be met with decisive action in accordance with the law,” Josephine Adeh, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT, said.

Meanwhile, some parents and stakeholders have called for the establishment of more permanent CBT centres, arguing that reliance on borrowed facilities contributes to logistical inefficiencies.

“As we advance in the computer and artificial intelligence age, systems should be customised to make the process easier for candidates and parents,” one parent said.

The examination continues today across all centres.

Students in Jos, Plateau State, writing the 2026 UTME will now start their exams a little later than planned.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said the change was made because of security concerns and the ongoing curfew in the area.

The new time affects candidates writing their exams between April 16 and April 25. Instead of starting at 8:30 a.m., the exam will now begin at 9:00 a.m.

JAMB explained that the decision is to keep students safe. With the curfew in place, leaving home too early could be risky, so the later time helps candidates avoid moving around during restricted hours.

JAMB spokesperson Benjamin Fabian said the board did not act alone. They spoke with security officials, including the police, and also consulted religious leaders in Jos before making the change.

He assured students that everything is under control and that proper arrangements have been made to ensure the exams go smoothly.

Students are advised to take note of the new time and plan their movement carefully.

The organisers of the Commonwealth Short Story Prize have released the shortlist for the 2026 edition, with 25 writers from 14 countries making the list.

The writers were selected from 7,806 entries submitted across 54 Commonwealth countries, highlighting the scale and competitiveness of the global writing contest.

The shortlist includes 11 men and 14 women, aged between 25 and 68.

African writers made a strong showing this year, with entries from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and South Africa. Nigerian writer Ola W. Halim, who was previously shortlisted in 2021, returns to the list again this year.

According to the organisers, the shortlisted stories explore a wide range of themes, including love, loss, war, migration and natural disasters. The stories feature different types of characters such as athletes, musicians, migrant workers and young people trying to navigate difficult situations.

The judges also selected stories originally written in other languages, including Bengali and Malay, showing the international reach of the prize.

Chair of the judging panel, British writer Louise Doughty, said choosing the shortlist was not easy because of the high quality of entries. She noted that the selected writers stood out for their ability to tell powerful and engaging stories within a short format.

The Commonwealth Short Story Prize is awarded every year for the best unpublished short fiction from the Commonwealth’s 56 member countries. It is open to writers in multiple languages, making it one of the most inclusive literary prizes in the world.

Regional winners from the five Commonwealth regions will be announced on May 13, 2026, while the overall winner will be revealed in late June.

Organisers say being shortlisted or winning the prize can open doors for writers, including opportunities to publish their work, connect with global audiences and grow their careers.

The shortlisted stories will also be published online, giving readers around the world access to the selected works.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has asked all candidates registered for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) to print their examination notification slips.

In a statement released on Thursday, JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said the main examination will begin on Thursday, April 16, 2026.

He advised candidates to print their slips early to check important details such as their exam date, time, and venue, as the examination will take place over several days.

To print the slip, candidates are to visit the official JAMB website and select the 2026 UTME slip printing option.

JAMB explained that each candidate has been given a specific schedule and urged them to arrive at their centres early. This, according to the board, will allow enough time for proper screening and accreditation before the exam starts.

The board also warned candidates and computer-based test (CBT) centre operators to avoid any form of exam malpractice. It said new and improved security measures have been introduced for this year’s examination, and anyone caught breaking the rules will face strict penalties.

Meanwhile, JAMB recently released the results of the 2026 UTME mock examination conducted on March 31 across 989 CBT centres nationwide.

The board also revealed that it has delisted 20 CBT centres due to technical problems that affected the smooth running of the mock exam in some parts of the country.
