The abolition of corporal punishment

The abolition of corporal punishment

By Nafisah Al-amin Ilyas

Corporal punishment is a severe and damaging form of punishment that can have long-lasting effects on children. It is often used in schools but its impact can be detrimental to a child’s academic and personal growth. Corporal punishment can take many forms, including beating, slapping, pinching, and other physical forms of punishment. These actions can lead to physical harm, emotional trauma, and a fear of learning.

The negative impact of corporal punishment is multifaceted. It does not promote discipline or teach good behavior. Instead, it can make children immune to punishment and decrease their respect for authority. Corporal punishment can also lead to physical and emotional damage, causing children to feel isolated and unloved. Furthermore, it violates children’s rights, including their right to learn and grow in a safe and supportive environment.

The effects of corporal punishment can be long-term and far-reaching. Children who experience corporal punishment may develop a negative attitude towards learning and school. In extreme cases, parents may even decide to withdraw their children from school due to the harsh treatment they receive. The trauma and emotional damage caused by corporal punishment can last a lifetime.

In conclusion, corporal punishment should be abolished. It is not an effective way to discipline children, and it can have severe and long-lasting consequences. Instead of physical punishment, teachers should focus on positive reinforcement and rewards for good behaviour. This approach can help children develop a love for learning and promote a positive and supportive learning environment. By reducing or abolishing corporal punishment, we can create a safer and more nurturing environment for children to grow and thrive.
