Jadon Sancho will be absent when Manchester United take on Aston Villa in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday.

That is no surprise.

Premier League rules prevent loan players appearing against their parent club, so Sancho is not allowed to be part of Unai Emery’s squad for the trip to the north-west.

Yet, in another sense, it just extends a sequence neither Sancho nor United can look back on with any fondness. Not playing at Old Trafford has been a common occurrence for a player who joined United on a five-year contract in 2021.

“A dream come true” was how Sancho described his move from Borussia Dortmund at the time.

The reality has turned out to be anything but.

The last time Sancho played at Old Trafford was on 26 August 2023, when he came on as a second-half substitute in a comeback victory against Nottingham Forest.

In total, he has made 30 Premier League appearances at Old Trafford. He completed the full 90 minutes on only 10 occasions. Aside from one seven-minute substitute appearance in the 2024 Community Shield, Sancho will spend the last two and a half years of his time at United playing elsewhere – Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and now Villa.

No wonder minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe was aghast to learn how much of Sancho’s fee United still had to pay, as he told BBC Sport in March 2025: “Sancho now plays for Chelsea and we pay half his wages. We’re paying £17m to buy him in the summer.”

Looking back, there are four key moments in Sancho’s United story.

The missed year

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made Sancho a key transfer target in the summer of 2020. Dortmund set a deadline of 10 August to agree a deal.

United felt the German giants were posturing and would let Sancho leave regardless.

They were wrong. Despite United increasing their bid, Sancho remained at Dortmund.

The following campaign turned out to be one of the most productive seasons of his career – 16 goals and 20 assists in 38 matches in all competitions. Sancho scored two and created one for Erling Haaland in a 4-1 German Cup final victory against RB Leipzig.

Sancho’s performances earned selection for England’s European Championship squad. At the age of 21, only Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Jude Bellingham were younger.

Daniil Medvedev brought an end to world number one Carlos Alcaraz’s perfect start to 2026 to reach the final at Indian Wells.

Alcaraz began the year by winning the Australian Open and was on a 16-match winning streak until running into Medvedev.

The Russian made a quick start, taking the opening set in 35 minutes, en route to a 6-3 7-6 (7-3) victory in California.

The 30-year-old, who has finished runner-up at the California event on two occasions, will face Jannik Sinner after the world number two caught the eye with a 6-2 6-4 win over Alexander Zverev earlier in the day.

“It’s an amazing feeling to beat someone like Carlos – the number one in the world,” said Medvedev.

“In a way, when you play him or Jannik [Sinner] or Novak [Djokovic] it doesn’t matter the ranking.

“It’s just a great feeling to play them, and to beat them, of course, is even better.”

Medvedev took both break-point opportunities in the first set, before battling to victory via a tie-break in the second.

The 2021 US Open champion, who beat defending champion Jack Draper in the quarter-finals, extended his own winning streak to nine matches after taking last month’s Dubai Tennis Championship title.

“I just have to give credit to Daniil,” said Alcaraz.

“I think he just played an amazing match. Since the start of the match until the end of the match, he was playing unreal, I got to say. I have never seen, to be honest, playing Daniil like this.”

Sinner looking to join elite club

Sinner has won 21 of his 24 titles on hard courts and looked on top form as he raced to victory against Zverev in one hour and 23 minutes.

The 24-year-old is aiming to become just the third man – after Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic – to capture all six ATP Masters 1,000 hard-court titles.

“It was a great performance – very solid from the back of the court. I tried to go for shots and that felt like one of the keys,” Sinner said.

“He has a huge serve so I tried to mix it up. From my side I was very precise and it was a solid performance.“I thought the match would be more physical but when both serve well it’s difficult to get into a rhythm with short points.”

Like with WSL clubs, most US teams share another franchise’s premises, be it a men’s team’s ground or a venue usually reserved for other sports, such as NFL stadium Lumen Field for Seattle Reign.

Kansas City buck this trend, and Denver Summit president Jen Millet believes it makes financial sense to follow suit.

“A big part of a sustainable business model is controlling revenue streams,” Millet says. “Women have been tenants and missed out on those things – food, beverage, parking, rentals, retail.

“It’s massively important to operate your own stadium.”

Having their own venue has also enhanced KC Current’s marketing strategy – something Kirsten Ross, president of official supporters’ club The Blue Crew, says has greatly raised the team’s profile.

“[The club] do a really good job of ramping up when the team is playing,” she says.

“Previously, people had no idea FC Kansas City existed. Now you can’t walk anywhere without knowing there’s a game for KC Current.”

Chris Long argues a bespoke stadium brings the best out of players – after all, Kansas City dominated the 2025 regular season and won the NWSL Shield by 21 points, even if they lost in the play-offs.

“It’s the feeling of belonging,” he says. “If you’re a tenant, the schedule isn’t based on you… you put your stuff in the locker room but have to take it out because it’s temporary.”

Jemison adds: “You feel like a visitor in your own home. We didn’t want that.”

How are these stadiums distinctive?

Designing a stadium for women’s sports offers opportunity to be different.

The 14,500-seat venue in Denver will have an intentionally open end to help create what architectural firm Populous describe as a “blend of architecture, green space and community”., external

Senior principal at Populous, Sherri Privitera, says inclusion was key to the design.

She points to a number of distinctive elements.

On tickets: “We will have flexible seating for people to be communal and areas for children who cannot sit for three hours. It’s about making it easy to enjoy the game without hassle.”

On changing rooms: “Ours will be fully private so the players feel comfortable getting ready.”

On facilities: “We have more toilets than we are required to and sensory rooms for mothers who are nursing or need to pump.”

Kansas City president Jemison echoes Privitera’s comments, saying integration and ownership are central to CPKC Stadium.

“We want female athletes and fans in a facility that feels like it is their own, where all feel welcome,” she says. “It is a community asset.”

Not that this aspect blunts the atmosphere.

“It’s a very loud, intimidating place,” co-owner Long adds. “It’s tight, it’s intimate, it’s sold out.”

New Zealander Brett Randell has become the first bowler in the 254-year history of first-class cricket to take five wickets in five balls.

The 30-year-old created the piece of cricket history playing for Central Stags on day two of their match against Northern Districts in New Zealand’s Plunket Shield.

“I’m pretty blown away,” said Randell. “The high was pretty crazy, it was like a pinch-me moment.

“I was trying to stay level-headed and keep putting the ball in the same area and then after the actual hat-trick [three wickets in three deliveries], just the same things – trying to put the ball in the same area.”

Randall took the first wicket of his five in a row at the end of his second over before taking the rest from the start of his third over as Northern Districts slumped from 4-0 to 9-5.

The right-arm medium pacer had figures of 5-2 at that point and took a wicket with the first ball of his fourth over to make it six wickets in eight balls.

He later dismissed another batter and finished with figures of 7-25.

“It gets drummed into us a lot that we don’t want to go searching for wickets, so I was trying to just keep bowling the same ball, and our ‘Plan A’ that we’d talked about, and it came off,” said Randall.

“I had no idea that it was the first time it [five wicket in five balls in first-class cricket] had happened in the world, it’s seriously cool.

“I mean, I don’t really have any words at the moment, to be honest. I’ll take it.”

While it is the first time a player has achieved the feat in first-class cricket, it is not the first time a player has taken five wickets in five balls in all formats.

Ireland international Curtis Campher became the first male player to do so in a professional match in July 2025 in a domestic T20 game.

Zimbabwe Women all-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu previously took five wickets in five balls in a domestic under-19 T20 in 2024.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander moved to within two games of breaking a decades-old NBA record as he scored 27 points to help the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 104-97 home win over the Golden State Warriors.

He has scored at least 20 points in 125 consecutive games for the defending champions, a sequence that began on 1 November 2024.

The legendary Wilt Chamberlain holds the record of 126 games – set between October 1961 and January 1963.

The Thunder host the Denver Nuggets on Monday and the Boston Celtics on Thursday.

Victory at Paycom Center was the Thunder’s fifth in a row. They became the first side to 50 wins this season and sit top of the Western Conference.

Gilgeous-Alexander said: “If we were the best team last year, all year, we win a championship, and we get better, we should put ourselves in great position to repeat.

“This year’s had a little bit more ups and downs for us, but I think we’ve done a pretty good job keeping that front of mind.”

The Warriors – again missing the injured Stephen Curry – scored seven unanswered points to reduce the Thunder’s lead to 99-97 before a three-pointer from Gilgeous-Alexander in the final minute.

Michael Porter Jr scored 30 points as the Brooklyn Nets came from 23 points down to win 107-105 at Eastern Conference leaders Detroit Pistons and end a 10-game losing streak.

Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 27 points as the Milwaukee Bucks beat the visiting Utah Jazz 113-99.

Jalen Johnson’s 35 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists helped the Atlanta Hawks to a 125-116 home win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Kawhi Leonard scored 28 points as the Los Angeles Clippers overturned a 19-point first-half deficit to win 123-120 at the Memphis Grizzlies.

The Orlando Magic won 119-92 at the Minnesota Timberwolves despite Anthony Edwards’ 34 points for the hosts.

League One side Port Vale stunned Premier League Sunderland as they reached the FA Cup quarter-finals with a hard-fought victory.

It is the first time that Vale, who are currently bottom of the third tier, have made it to the last eight since 1954.

Ben Waine silenced the visiting supporters when he sent a looping header over Melker Ellborg after the ball was flicked around in the box from a corner.

Sunderland had nearly found an early opener in the fourth minute when Eliezer Mayenda struck the post with a close-range header, but they were unable to produce much that was equally threatening.

Spurred on by a buoyant home crowd, Port Vale often caused problems when they threw numbers forward on the counter-attack and hit Sunderland with intensity.

They had to spend much of the game camped back in their own half, setting up in a low block to stymie their opponents, but remained patient.

Sunderland persisted with their aim to pass through the thirds but found it difficult to break Vale down and often lost possession in the middle of the park.

Ellborg was arguably lucky to have not been sent off in the second half when he escaped with a yellow card after bringing down George Hall with a two-footed challenge.

The visitors’ best moments came in the second half as the mounting threat of a cup exit finally forced them to attack with vigour, but Vale were able to hold out.

This has been a difficult season for Vale, who are 11 points adrift of league safety and look destined to drop to League Two, but a cup run will provide a rare moment of pleasure for their fans.

Vale have only managed six league victories this season, but have now won five matches in the FA Cup and have knocked out a team ranked 57 places above them in the pyramid.

Sunderland analysis: Lack of intensity costly for Black Cats

Sunderland were as much to blame for their defeat in Burslem as their third-tier opponents.

Against a team who had to play 120 minutes as they beat Bristol City in midweek to reach this round of the competition, it would have been reasonable to expect Sunderland’s superior fitness levels to show.

But they did little of the sort and, for too long, their football was pedestrian and did not do too much to wear out Port Vale as they knocked the ball around without much of a clear ambition.

Throughout the game, Sunderland lacked the precision they needed in the final third and they should really have made the most of their slew of second-half opportunities.

This was not a case of a second-string Premier League side being unable to fight in the FA Cup, but Port Vale’s battling spirit – markedly different to their opponents – made a significant difference.

For all the control Sunderland mustered, 69.2% possession and 17 shots to Port Vale’s nine, they had little to show for it in terms of chances to cause goalkeeper Joe Gauci much concern.

Vitor Pereira is still searching for his first Premier League victory as Nottingham Forest boss.

A 2-1 defeat at Brighton on Sunday – in his third league game in charge – stretched their winless run to five league games.

With 10 games to go, Forest teeter just two points above the relegation zone.

But Pereira, who became the club’s fourth permanent manager this season when he replaced Sean Dyche last month, insists he is not paying attention to the Premier League table.

“I believe we need to focus on the present and focus on the day we play, focus on the game we are playing. Not to look at the future,” Pereira told BBC Sport.

“The future… we will see what happens. If you lose your focus thinking about what can happen, this is a mistake in my opinion.

“Just look at the now. Just rest, be ready, prepare for the next game and focus on the next game.”

As Forest balance Europa League football with a relegation battle, how likely is it that they will stay above the bottom three and survive this season?

Is Europa League football taking a toll on Forest?

Pereira blamed a lack of preparation time for their defeat at Brighton.

The club lost 2-1 at home to Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday, although they progressed to the last 16 thanks to their 3-0 win in the first leg.

It means that Forest, who have been drawn against Danish side Midtjylland, will end up playing six games in the first 22 days of March.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Pereira said: “The tiredness is not only physical, it’s mental too. You need to recover.

“But this is what we have. You cannot use the Europa League as an excuse because we are there and we are there competing.

“Before I accepted the job, I knew that we have ambitions to keep our targets in both competitions.”

Forest are a long way from the joys of last season, when they finished seventh and secured a place in Europe for the first time since 1996.

The club have won just seven of their 28 league games this term and they have struggled without last season’s top scorer Chris Wood, who has been out since October with knee injury.

He was a home team referee”, who “doesn’t understand football.”

Furious interim Tottenham manager Igor Tudor left nobody in any doubt about his thoughts on Fulham’s opening goal on Sunday, as a 2-1 defeat deepened his side’s relegation fears.

Tudor also accused Fulham’s Raul Jimenez of “cheating” by pushing Radu Dragusin before Harry Wilson swept home.

And such was his anger, he made the accusation of Thomas Bramall being a “home referee” twice.

What made it worse for the 47-year-old Croatian was a belief Tottenham were denied a goal in similar circumstances last week when Randal Kolo Muani thought he had made it 2-2 against Arsenal, only for the goal to be ruled out for a push on Gabriel.

Tudor, furious at what he called an “incredible mistake”, told BBC Sport: “Their first goal changes the situation on the pitch. It’s a big refereeing mistake. There’s no consistency last week, what happened today was incredible. The referee was incredible today – not giving a goal there is madness.

“It’s about consistency of the decision, they need to understand even if it is a soft touch but he is not watching the ball, it is a foul. He [Jimenez] gained an advantage and they scored. You need to give these fouls.

“I didn’t like the referee today, too much of a home team referee. I didn’t feel well with him. All the decisions were on their side. He doesn’t understand football, the feeling of what is wrong and what is right.

“He [Jimenez] was not thinking about the ball, he was thinking how to cheat, he cheated the player, was pushing, it was cheating and it’s a foul. Ninety-nine of 100 people will say it’s a foul, it’s so obvious.” ’We know this is a big emergency’

Ever since a one season spell in the old Second Division in 1977-78, Tottenham have been a top-flight club – and that position has rarely been under threat.

Yes, Spurs came 17th in 2024-25, but they ended 13 points better off than 18th-placed Leicester, with Ange Postecoglou focusing on the Europa League towards the end of the season, a competition which they went on to win.

This year feels more perilous.

Make no mistake, Tottenham – 16th in the Premier League and four points above the relegation zone – are in a battle to stay up.

Speaking after the 2-1 loss at Fulham, Spurs midfielder Yves Bissouma, said: “We lost again. It is not easy, especially for us, for the club. It is not good for everyone.

(BBCSports)

“We know this is a big emergency. We need to change a lot of things, we need to put effort into the game to try and win games. At the moment, it is just hard.” (BBCSport)

India secured a T20 World Cup semi-final showdown with England after a tense five-wicket victory over West Indies thanks to Sanju Samson’s scintillating unbeaten 97.

Samson produced a chanceless knock off 50 balls – hitting 12 fours and four sixes – as India chased down 196 in a thrilling winner-takes-all encounter to round off the Super 8 stage at Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The tournament co-hosts’ triumph ensured they claimed the runners-up spot in Group 1 behind South Africa which sealed a meeting with Group 2 winners England at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday (13:30 GMT).

India had never chased more than 173 to win a World Cup match in the 20-over format, and were indebted to Samson’s level-headed approach.

Tilak Varma’s 27 off 15 balls was the next highest score by an India batter which underlined the composed manner in which Samson held together India’s reply.

Fittingly, Samson was there at the end to hit the winning runs – striking a six and then a four off Romario Shepherd to get India over the line with four balls to spare.

Earlier, India had been sloppy in the field after they had inserted West Indies which had allowed their opponents to post a competitive total.

There was tetchiness and a few cross words as India dropped three catches – Abhishek Sharma guilty of one particularly poor fumble – and a missed run-out chance.

Roston Chase was unexpectedly handed an opening slot and provided stability with his measured aggression – top-scoring with 40 off 25 – to help West Indies reach 102-1 before Jasprit Bumrah put the brakes on.

Bumrah outfoxed Chase with a slower ball then snared Shimron Hetmyer, West Indies’ standout batter in the tournament, for 27 with a delivery which angled across and took a thin edge as the left-hander tried to hit across the line.

Rovman Powell and Jason Holder reignited the innings with unbeaten knocks of 34 and 37 to help West Indies reach 195-4 but it did not prove to be enough once Samson settled in.

With the pressure of 50,597 clad in blue packed into the stands at Eden Gardens, and the weight of a nation on their shoulders, Samson played a stellar hand for an India team bidding to defend the trophy they won in 2024.

This would have been the kind of chase that Virat Kohli would have masterfully approached in the past – one where temperament was as pertinent a factor as talent.

Samson toppled the pillars of the West Indies bowling attack in a methodical manner – expertly picking his moments to attack and increase the tempo of the chase with ruthless calculation.

The United States won the men’s Olympic ice hockey gold medal for the first time in 46 years by beating neighbours Canada 2-1 in a sensational conclusion to the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The final gold medal of the Games was sealed by Jack Hughes in overtime after the USA withstood pressure from the dominant Canadians throughout most of the match, goalkeeper Connor Hellebuyck having the game of his life.

It is the first time since the ‘Miracle on Ice’ at Lake Placid in 1980 that the USA’s men have won Olympic gold.

And it is the first time the Americans have won the competition outside of their home country.

This was the second ice hockey final between USA and Canada at Milan-Cortina 2026, after the American women triumphed in their gold medal match – also 2-1 in overtime.

Now, the men have completed a remarkable double triumph.

After a tight start, USA broke through in brilliant style through some individual magic by Matt Boldy.

Boldy picked up the puck inside his own half, chipped it over two defenders and outmuscled them to collect it before nudging it around a stranded Jordan Binnington.

Canada, as they had in the previous two knockout rounds, needed to come from behind but struggled to build momentum until towards the end of the second period.

The USA defended manfully, including a period when they were three against five with two in the penalty box.

But in the 38th minute, a quick switch from Devon Toews found Cale Makar wide open on the right and he drove the puck past Hellebuyck.

Canada continued to dominate in the third period, and in regular time had 41 shots to USA’s 26.

But they seemed to find every possible way not to score. Hellebuyck kept out Mitch Marner from close range with a stunning piece of goalkeeping, before Nathan MacKinnon somehow swept wide of an open goal at the back post.

And the Americans came close to re-taking the lead themselves at the end of the second period when Brock Faber’s slap shot deflected off the post.

It meant three-on-three overtime for the first time in Olympic history. In the gold medal match, both teams field three players plus a goalkeeper in overtime, and play until a goal is scored with no shootout.

And after both sides had chances, 101 seconds into overtime Hughes buried his shot to write his name into American sporting folklore.
