When you swallow food, it begins a journey down your gut. On its way, it is gradually broken down into chemical molecules small enough for your body to absorb and use. This breakdown process is called digestion.
Your stomach can swell up to eight times as big when it is full.
Your stomach produces hydrochloric acid, strong enough to dissolve a lump of bone in a few hours. That’s why your stomach lining is coated with protective mucus.
Your stomach is a bag-like organ, and it’s where the breakdown of food really begins. The chemicals inside it attack the food, and the walls squeeze it to a pulp. Your stomach stores partially digested food until the intestines are ready to receive it.
