Fostering critical thinking through students debates

By Musa Shamsuddeen

The debates organised by Aunty Laila Private School Debating Club, was to cultivate critical thinking, effective communication, and civic engagement. The school recently hosted a series of debates on two timely topics: subsidy removal and the merits of physical versus distant learning.

The debates brought together students from various grades, providing a platform for them to share their perspectives, challenge assumptions, and develop well-reasoned arguments.

The first debate centered on the contentious issue of subsidy removal. Proponents of subsidy argued that it provides essential support to vulnerable populations, enabling them to access basic necessities like food, healthcare, and education. They emphasized that sudden removal of subsidies would exacerbate poverty and inequality.

On the other hand, those in favor of subsidy removal contended that it fosters dependency, inefficiency, and corruption. They argued that targeted support mechanisms, such as cash transfers and social welfare programs, would be more effective in addressing poverty and promoting economic growth.

The second debate explored the relative merits of physical and distant learning. Advocates for physical learning emphasised the importance of face-to-face interactions, hands-on experiences, and socialisation in shaping well-rounded individuals. They also highlighted concerns about the digital divide and unequal access to technology.

Proponents of distant learning, on the other hand, argued that it offers flexibility, convenience, and accessibility, particularly for students with disabilities or those living in remote areas. They also pointed to the potential for personalised learning, reduced costs, and increased access to quality educational resources.

The debates showcased the students’ ability to engage in respectful, informed discussions, and to articulate their perspectives with confidence. By encouraging critical thinking, research, and effective communication, these debates helped students develop essential skills for active citizenship and participation in democratic processes.

One student participant, Rukayya Hadi Abba said: “The debates helped me see multiple perspectives and challenge my own assumptions. It was an incredible learning experience that will stay with me forever.”

The debates at Aunty Laila Private School Kano demonstrated the importance of fostering critical thinking, effective communication, and civic engagement among young people. By providing a platform for students to engage with pressing issues, we can empower them to become informed, active citizens who are equipped to navigate the complexities of the 21st century.
